Slide #16 - Greenspan gets ready to jump from building
Slide 16 shows a cartoon of a policeman trying to talk a well-dressed man out of jumping off a building. The suicidal man is heard muttering the words, 'spreading deflation, record trade deficits, stock market bubble.' The policeman tells the suicidal man that he should not jump because, 'Greenspan can solve all these problems.' However, another man on the roof recognizes that the man preparing to jump is Alan Greenspan himself.
This bit of black humor is meant to make the point that at some point, the remedies that are being offered are only making the problem worse and that ultimately there will be no way out for Mr. Greenspan (and all of us) but to face the inevitable deflation.
